How to calculate a tip
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage. For 20% of $64.50: 64.50 × 0.20 = $12.90, so the total is $77.40. A quick way to do 20% in your head: move the decimal one place left to get 10% ($6.45) and double it.

How much to tip
Tipping customs vary by service and region. In the US, 15–20% is common for table service, and tip jars or tip screens at counters are optional. Many people tip on the amount before tax; tipping on the total after tax is a little more generous.
Splitting the bill
The calculator divides the bill plus tip evenly. Turn on rounding to round each share up to a whole dollar; the extra goes to the tip, and the effective tip percentage is shown.
Taking tips at your own counter
If you run a café, coffee cart or food truck, count tips separately from sales so they’re easy to pay out and report. SleepingFire adds a tip at checkout and shows tips in the day’s Z-report. For the cash box at close, use the cash counter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage. A 20% tip on $45 is $45 × 0.20 = $9, for a total of $54.
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Many people tip on the pre-tax amount. Tipping on the total after tax gives a slightly larger tip. Either is common.
How does splitting work?
The bill plus tip is divided evenly between the number of people. With round-up on, each share is rounded up to the next dollar.
